On The Road
Thor & I made an amusing observation on our two days of driving up to the Northwest.
On previous road trips we’ve been sure to have plenty of on-board entertainment: Books on cd (guilty pleasure indulgent stuff usually like “Davinci Code”, “Ender’s Game” and this time “A Scanner Darkly”); episodes of “This American Life” on cd; lateral thinking and word puzzles; and a variety of other amusements.
We found, though, this time around that we were perfectly happy to just drive, talk and stare out the window. Out of nearly 14 hours of driving over two days, we listened to about 10 minutes of our book and about 30 minutes of news on satellite radio (to catch up on the latest drama in the Middle East). What we realized was that our life these days consists of such a constant stream of media, information, communication, and stimulation and is so non-stop full of activity that we were perfectly content to just sit and do nothing.
And even Quinn at one point when asked whether he’d like to watch another movie, color, or look at some books answered, “I just wanna hang out.”
