From epic tales super powered adventures, to book based favorites to awesome true stories, these movies offer the best for kids, teens and families. By making us think, making us smile, and giving us a lot of stuff to talk about, they offered worthwhile messages, modelled important character strengths and most importantly offered an exceptional media experience to families.
CARS 3; A sequel of a sequel, the characters learn key life lessons, and there are positive messages about perseverance, communication, empowerment, and mentorships.
COCO; a brilliantly made film about the Day of the Dead is a tribute to Mexican traditions and customs. There are touching moments, especially if the viewers have lost relatives, but it has powerful themes of gratitude and teamwork and it encourages audiences to love and appreciate their family and follow their dreams.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST; A live action remake of Disney’s gorgeous “tale as old as time.” It is fantastic, although a bit more intense than its animated original, but the story encourages us to look beyond the superficial and to be curious, humble and generous. The tale maybe as old as time, but its retold with freshness, cheek and flair.
SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING; this movie works as a clever high school comedy, but at the same time is funny and every bit of your friendly neighborhood hero. This take on Spiderman has perilous moments but is also peppered with messages about courage, and responsibility.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2; our favorite team of reformed outlaws is back for another adventure full of space battles and classic tunes. Beneath the jokes and the action are clear messages of teamwork, and unconditional chosen family bonds.
WONDER WOMAN; this engaging and entertaining story is set during World War 1 and is a diverse superhero adventure about sacrifice, teamwork and compassion. It teaches that women can be fierce and loyal.
LION; this emotional drama is about a man who lost his family when he was 5 and tries to find them as an adult. It’s a tear jerker but it has messages about gratitude and the power of technology. Let’s just say that if your heart still works, there is no way that Lion will not move you.
ARRIVAL; This profoundly thoughtful and compassionate, this science fiction drama is all about trying to communicate with aliens rather than defeating them. It makes the audience reconsider that which truly makes us human.
QUEEN OF KATWE; This true story about a girl from the slums of Uganda who late becomes a chess champion, is accompanied by strong themes of empathy, humility, integrity. It is a story about hope and courage and determination that goes in hand with it.
KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS; with themes of courage and teamwork, this adventure is set in an alternative fantasy Japan. It is a story of love between mothers and sons, as well as the tale of a young storyteller learning how to be a hero and the magic of a good story.
